Before every flight, every glider pilot runs through a short sequence of checks before asking for the launch cable to be connected. CBSIFTBEC – Controls, Ballast, Straps, Instruments, Flaps, Trim, Brakes, Eventualities, Canopy – in this photo the checks have reached the Brakes part of the checklist, hence the airbrakes are pushed fully open, checked each side for symmetry, half closed, checked again for symmetry, and finally closed and locked, before moving on to the next item in the list. As you progress through the stages of learning to fly, you’ll have gone through the checks so many times the list will be memorised and the steps second nature.
