Cambridge Gliding Club Open Days June 15th & 16th – Anniversary of the First Post War Motor Race

What’s so special about June 16th 2024 and June 15th 1946 as well?

June 16th 2024 is Father’s Day whilst on 15th June 1946 the first post WW II closed circuit motor race, organised by Cambridge University Automobile Club, was held at RAF Gransden Lodge and attracted some 35 entries over 12 races.

For Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June Cambridge Gliding Centre is organising two Open Days on that same airfield to introduce visitors to the sport of gliding.

Gliding is an exciting hobby where women and men participate equally. It is enjoyed by all ages, with youngsters able to learn to fly from as young as 12 years old, and (with proper training) fly solo at 14, as many do. For some it’s also the gateway to a fulfilling career in commercial aviation, where employers and apprenticeship schemes look favourably on glider pilots, whose flying experience and technical abilities give them a head start in the hiring process.

The events will be open for visitors from 08:45 hrs until 17:30 hrs. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Centre on either day to learn more about the sport of gliding. A limited number of Introductory Gliding Lessons will also be available but need to be booked in advance using Form A below or using this link. Places will be reserved upon acceptance of the £25 deposit and confirmed to you by email. This will be deducted from the actual cost of your flight which will be in the order of £75. Payment details can be found on the registration Form A.

When they are all booked a waiting list will be made available at the Club Office on each day for visitors and we will fly as many as possible.

On June 15th members of several car clubs are being invited to visit and see for themselves where motor racing history was made. Although the majority of the old runways/race-track are still in evidence most are now grassed over and used for gliding whilst the remainder are used for access to the club facilities and farm vehicles.

Specific parking for up to 50 Car Club members will be set aside on June 15th and to help manage this please register in advance using Form B below or found through this link. This also contains a specific sign-up section if you wish to book an Introductory Gliding Lesson. Places for these will be reserved upon acceptance of a £25 deposit and confirmed to you by email. This will be deducted from the actual cost of your flight which will be in the order of £75. Payment details can be found on the registration Form B.

For those not able to visit on June 15th or 16th introductory lessons can also be booked at Cambridge Gliding Centre seven days a week from April to October. Full details for these can be found at Book A Flight on the CGC web site.
