Who is the course for?
- Power pilots who wish to qualify as tug pilots
Pre-Course Entry Requirements:
You must have at least 30 Hours as Pilot in Command of SEP aircraft and a minimum of 60 take offs and landings.
You must have completed a conversion course to the Robin DR400R with Cambridge Gliding Centre. On completion of the conversion you will be required to gain sufficient experience on the aircraft to satisfy the Chief Tug Pilot that you are ready to commence the Sailplane Towing Rating Course.
The Chief Tug Pilot must have approved the pilot’s participation on this course
- Qualify as a tug pilot
- Ground briefings
The minimum number of tows to be completed as PIC for issue of the Part FCL Rating is 10.

The course is ONLY for the purposes of obtaining the Sailplane Towing Rating. Once the pilot has the rating on their licence then they may expect some continuation training at their club which may also include type conversion to other types of tow aircraft.
On completion of the course there is a CAA fee of £127 for adding the rating to your licence which will need to be paid by the trainee.
