November crispness

Glider pilots get pretty nerdy about clouds. Clouds are signs of lift, so we pay a lot of attention to them.

Look at these! Aren’t they magnificent?

These clouds even had a rainbow fitted:

And these ones managed to reflect in the puddles in front of the clubhouse.

The air was very crisp today and the contrast between the clouds and the blue sky was lovely.

You might be thinking “those clouds look rainy”, and yes, dear reader, today was pretty rainy at the beginning and then it settled into a pattern of sun plus gusty winds.

Despite this, we still managed 17 flights! This included a mixture of training flights, solo flights, and motor glider flights for folks who are converting from “normal” gliders to those with motors.

Surprisingly, there was actually some decent lift. An excitable atmosphere full of interesting clouds usually means there’s air moving around, and some of it’s going up. A pilot with greater competence than I might well have been able to stay up in it.

This time of year is fairly unpredictable for gliding, though. Drop us a line if you want to try it – but we’ll probably suggest you wait until the early spring when we can rely on the weather a little more.
